    DANCE CLASSICS

    "Infinity Within [CUTOUT]" Deee-Lite
    ...more here.
Deee-Lite's second album of freaked-out funk includes the hot dance number "Runaway" as well as the sociopolitical classics "Vote, Baby, Vote" and "I Had a Dream I Was Falling Through a Hole in the Ozone Layer." Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, and Fred Wesley, who all played with the hardest working man in show business, make guest appearances. And you can grab it for less than $6.

"Once Upon a Time" Donna Summer
    ...more here.
Donna Summer dominated disco in the 1970s, and her music still goes perfectly with disco balls, white polyester suits, and slinky, sequined dresses with super-skinny straps. This 70-minute-plus album offers an updated version of a classic fairy tale, telling the story of a little girl lost in the city, searching for the Prince Charming she wants to dance into her life.

"Slave to the Rhythm" Grace Jones
    ...more here.
"Slave to the Rhythm" offers a great audio portrait of the incredible Miss Grace Jones as well as a powerful testament to the production talents of Trevor Horn, who also worked with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and ABC. Grace's haircut may not be your cup of tea, but her music will move you.

Floating over the Decks The fifth installment in the highly respected lounge series finds Om Records compiling a heady mix of mellow rhythms and downtempo beat science. It's just the latest in an impressive catalog of discs that have made stellar use of artists like Thievery Corporation, Fila Brazillia, and Jazzanova, along with Om standbys People Under the Stairs and King Kooba. Bring them home, then stay in for the night with a bottle of Cabernet. Life should be so easy.

Download Mode Depeche Mode have weathered a brutal storm of bad luck and near-tragedy in recent years. Besides the drastic shifts in popular music culture since their "Violator" heyday, they've had to endure longtime band member Alan Wilder's departure and David Gahan's drug problems, which reached their nadir with an attempted suicide. However, they are far from done, as their latest record, "Exciter," makes abundantly clear. The first single from the record, "Dream On," has already been remixed extensively--"Dream On (Pink Noise Club Mix)" is an Amazon.com exclusive.

    TECH-MEX TWOSOME

South-of-the-Border Spinners Rhythm is one of the few universal languages, and though Mexico hasn't exactly been at the center of techno's worldwide explosion, dance music has been at the heart of the culture for centuries. Two new exports from the country, Nortec Collective and Moenia, have taken those native musical elements and folded them into a style of techno all their own on their respective debut records, "The Tijuana Sessions" and "Le Modulor." A new subgenre in the making? Tech-Mex? Whatever you call it, it works.

    EDITOR'S CHOICE

A Delectable Duo "Solace" Mandalay Our price: $13.27 | You save: $0.70
    ...more here.
The balance of Saul Freeman's baroque, trip-hop-flavored backgrounds against Nicola Hitchcock's hushed, barely-there vocals makes for a lush, wintry mix of styles. Mandalay's stateside debut, "Solace," showcases tracks from the previously released imports "Empathy" and "Instinct," and also includes a second disc of remixes by the likes of Nitin Sawhney, Futureshock, and Wagon Christ's Luke Vibert. Falling somewhere between Cocteau Twins and Massive Attack, with a dash of Sarah McLachlan on the side, it's a two-for-one worth having.

    The Secret Is Out
    "Vol. 2-Interpretations"
    Interpretations
    ...more here.
Jerry Bonham's name has been bubbling beneath the surface while progressive trance DJs like Sasha and John Digweed have ruled the techno landscape, but his work has long been admired in dance music's vast underground. However, his mix on the double-disc "Interpretations II" set, brought to you by the good people at San Francisco's Spundae (where Bonham is the resident DJ), should serve to educate the masses. Smart and stylistically diverse, Bonham seamlessly charts his way through rhythmic sine waves and sudden bursts of beat-driven bliss with the panache of a budding superstar.

    Ministry of Sound's Latest Stars
    "Ministry of Sound: Club Nation"
    Bt, et al
    ...more here.
Hot on the heels of the excellent compilations "Trance Nation America" and "House Nation America" comes Ministry of Sound's latest two-disc DJ face-off, "Club Nation America." As with the trance and house versions in this series (the former featuring Taylor and Jimmy Van M, the latter, Little Louie Vega and Erick Morillo), two DJs are each given a full CD for their wax-spun spells. This time East Coast DJ Johnny Vicious is handed the reins on the first disc, on which he delivers an unapologetically aggressive, pop-trance party classic featuring work from Delerium, Paul van Dyk, BT, and a few of his own self-produced groovers. The U.K.'s Tall Paul takes over on the second disc, using remixed Moby and Fatboy Slim, among others, to piece together an irresistible spiderweb of fat, sticky beats.

    Fairy-Tale Beats
    "lemonjelly.ky"
    Lemon Jelly
    ...more here.
Electronic music's downtempo side has a lot more room to be explored, as Lemon Jelly's giddy psychedelia makes clear. A collection of three previously released EPs, "lemonjelly.ky" is nevertheless a perfectly cohesive mix of endlessly inventive and sunny songs that feels like the soundtrack to a land of fantasy, complete with dragons, sea monsters, heroes, and damsels in distress. Like a PB&J with the crusts cut off, it should please anyone who appreciates the simple pleasures of white billowy clouds and imaginary dreamworlds.

    Sung to Sleep
    "Hoshi No Koe"
    Nobukazu Takemura
    ...more here.
Experimental Japanese DJ Nobukazu Takemura returns in his Child's View alter-ego, spinning a web of 21st-century lullabies. Incorporating some of the same dizzy, anarchic minimalism of records like "Scope," Takemura's work still retains much of its experimental nature, eschewing for the most part any orientation around traditional structure and rhythm. As Child's View, however, his work is more playful and deliberately impressionistic, and it's grounded in a certain emotional warmth. Focusing on computerized ambience and sometimes inscrutable musical ideas, "Hoshi No Koe" is the music that sends robots off to peaceful slumber.

    EDITOR'S CHOICE

    Flora, Fauna, Beat Nirvana
    "Lifeforms"
    Future Sound of London
    ...more here.
Not kicked-back enough to be downtempo but still filled with fascinating ambience and adventuresome DJ skills, Future Sound of London's "Lifeforms" pulses with a decidedly organic sensibility. Bypassing techno's usual space-agey other-worlds, "Lifeforms" keeps its feet on terra firma, exploring techno's possibilities by incorporating the sounds of nature and the world around us. Played from beginning to end, it's a wellspring of electronic creativity crossed with a giant dose of humanity.

    "Discovery"
    Daft Punk
    ...order here
Bouncier and even more outrightly disco/new wave-influenced than their worldwide smash debut, "Homework," Daft Punk's long-awaited "Discovery" is a head-bobbing gem, filled with smart bursts of retro bliss. In this French duo's hands, the familiar becomes fresh as they throw all the Vocoder treatments and old-school, Harold Faltermeyer-esque synth cheese together to form a strange but irresistible pastiche. In fact, it's amazing how much they manage to get away with considering how silly this music threatens to become. But get away with it they do, to thrilling and immensely pleasing effect.

    "Production"
    Mirwais
    ...order here
Mirwais's hype factor reached stratospheric levels after he produced Madonna's huge hit record "Music," and his work on his own new record justifies that acclaim. Boasting impressive stylistic creativity and a flair for studio wizardry, Mirwais brings a playful pop sensibility to his music, even while cultivating a sparse, retro-industrial vibe. The record's title, "Production," implies that Mirwais is aware of all the hoopla; thankfully, he's come through with a clever, eclectic effort all his own.

    "Mushroom Jazz Vol. 3"
    DJ Mark Farina
    ...order here
Mark Farina's third release in the series that made him famous, "Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 3" is a smoky mix of house, jazz, and hip-hop that continues to please, even amid the growing popularity of downtempo music. Alongside new-blood contemporaries like Thievery Corporation and more adventurous artists such as Tosca and Kruder & Dorfmeister, Farina delivers another effortlessly mellow hodgepodge of sophisticated chill tunes.

    "Tijuana Sessions Vol. 1"
    Nortec Collective
    ...order here
Spilling over from the Latin influence found in the needlework of turntable maniacs like Amon Tobin and Up, Bustle & Out, Mexico's Nortec Collective bring an ultracool, kitchen-sink sound to their debut record. Using a wealth of little-known source material, Nortec Collective blow through sunny beats, eerie collages, and occasional bursts of brass (check out Norteño's tuba work on "Terrestre") to convey an effortless urbanity and a strange, but immediately tangible, sense of fun.

Drum & bass pioneer LTJ Bukem has relentlessly worked to popularize the sunnier, more progressive end of the genre during the last decade, and his newest double-disc is a definite apex. EDITOR'S CHOICE

    "Sounds Of The Satellites"
    Laika
    ...order here
The world is not wanting for ethereal, female-vocal techno. A descendant of the dream-pop genre and artists like Cocteau Twins, the format has expanded beyond its goth-scene, art-rock origins, littering the musical landscape with knock-offs and half-baked tunes. On "Sounds of the Satellites," however, Laika perfect the formula, concocting an engrossing soundtrack for the dreams and pillow talks that happen late, late at night.

    SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED
"Diamonds Are Forever: The Remix Album" Shirley Bassey
    ...order here
Forever associated with nude silhouettes and phallic pistol images, Shirley Bassey's vocal contributions to the James Bond series' famous opening-credit motifs are the stuff of kitsch legend. Her famously overwrought vocals on classics like "Diamonds Are Forever," "Moonraker," and, of course, "Goldfinger" lie somewhere between soulful exotica and cheesy extravagance. On "The Remix Album," however, DJs like Propellerheads, Nightmares on Wax, and Groove Armada make her the ideal house-music diva.

    DANGEROUS BEATS

    "Hello Friends!"
    Jack Dangers
    ...order here
Former Meat Beat Manifesto frontman Jack Dangers turns in a sly, sample-laden mix on "¡Hello Friends!" For this disc Dangers spins and reinterprets tracks off the Tino Corp. label he founded with fellow beat scientist Ben Stoakes. The energetic record is appealingly cohesive amid the clutter of beats and bass, despite Dangers's rampant samples and restless turntablism.
