    Perform Music of the Beatles:
The renowned king’singers join Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops to reinterpret the British invasion as they perform favorite Beatles tunes. On August 29, 1966, the Beatles gave their final public concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Perform Music of the Beatles featuring king'singers is being released on the 35th anniversary of that singular event.

    POSTED JULY 31, 2001

"Bells Are Ringing (2001 Revival Broadway Cast)" Faith Prince
    ...available here.
Despite its presence in this year's Tony nominations, the bells didn't exactly ring for the 2001 revival of Comden-Green and Styne's funny but touching 1956 musical about a telephone operator. But the party's not quite over, as the newly released revival cast recording gives you a chance to listen to Faith Prince's take on the role made famous by Judy Holliday.

"Bernstein: West Side Story Suite" Joshua Bell
    ...available here.
For a new slant on a perennial favorite, try the "West Side Story Suite" featuring world-class violinist Joshua Bell. His new release includes a completely new symphonic suite that arranges the Bernstein musical as a sort of mini violin concerto. Also here are arrangements of music from "Candide" and "On the Town" and Bernstein's "Serenade" (beating "Hedwig" to the punch by taking Plato's "Symposium" as its inspiration).

    "Dominic Chianese Hits" Dominic Chianese
    ...available here.
Dominic Chianese is most familiar from his role on the hit HBO series "The Sopranos." But with his own new "Hits" release, Chianese proves the consummate charmer, adding emotional sincerity and directness to this collection of traditional and original tunes.

    "Playing It Cool" Lea Delaria
    ...available here.
An entertainer of many faces--comedienne, actress, singer--Lea DeLaria switches personae yet again on "Playing It Cool." It's a witty, sophisticated collection, with nods to Judy Garland and Billie Holiday, setting up a fascinating counterpoint to DeLaria's recent (dual-role) appearance in the revival of "The Rocky Horror Show."

    "Dreamsville" Stacey Kent
    ...available here.
Stacey Kent became a darling of NPR with last year's album, "Let Yourself Go," and she continues to hold her own at the top of London's jazz vocal scene with this latest collection. "Dreamsville" offers up a tantalizing program of ballads showcasing Kent's relaxed but seductive style.

Here are some more titles for Broadway fans to consider during the dog days of summer:

    "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"
    ...available here.

    "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"
    ...available here.

    "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

    Interview with Engelbert Humperdinck
"Sometimes you do different little inflections here, there, and everywhere to change it for yourself. But the audiences don't want you to change it. I keep it fresh because I have a great sense of humor as well. I never take my image seriously, and I pass my sense of humor on to the audience and they like it." --Engelbert Humperdinck discussing his career longevity in the context of his recent album, "It's All in the Game"

"The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess / Rattle, White, Haymon, Glyndebourne Opera" Trevor Nunn
      ...available here.
Trevor Nunn's acclaimed production of the beloved but complex masterpiece by Gershwin is now available on DVD. This version of "Porgy and Bess" features conductor Simon Rattle, with Willard White as Porgy, Cynthia Haymon as Bess, and Damon Evans in the role of Sporting Life. POSTED 7 JUL 2001

"I asked some of the composers that are pretty prominent here on Broadway to write songs for me in the genre so they would fit on the album. I think it is really important as an artist to promote our young talent in the composing field. So I was glad that, for example, Dick [Scanlan] and Jeanine [Tesori] wrote "The Girl in 14G" for me, which enabled me to use a lot of my different voices." --Kristin Chenoweth discussing her new album, "Let Yourself Go"... "Bat Boy: Original Cast Recording" Laurence O'Keefe
      ...available here.
As far as we know, "Bat Boy" is the only musical to have been inspired by a tabloid headline about a half-boy-half-bat found in a West Virginia cave. Composer-lyricist Laurence O'Keefe came up with catchy songs that owe a lot to late 1960s and early '70s rock musicals, skillfully walking the thin line between over-the-top camp and real emotion.

"Come Dream With Me" Jane Monheit
      ...available here.
At the tender age of 23, Jane Monheit returns as the stunningly gifted retro mistress of jazz vocalism on "Come Dream with Me." It's a treasure of richly felt interpretations and torchy--but never tortured--sentiments.

"42nd Street (2001 Revival Broadway Cast)" Harry Warren
      ...available here.
Believe it or not, "The Producers" didn't take away all this year's Tony awards. Selected as Best Musical Revival in the 2001 Tonys, "42nd Street" stars Christine Ebersole, who also picked up the award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. At last, the 2001 revival cast recording has been released.

"Classic Julie Classic Broadway" Julie Andrews
      ...available here.
Here's a collection of favorite selections by one of Broadway's true classic voices, Julie Andrews. The anthology covers chestnuts by Lerner and Loewe and Rodgers and Hammerstein, including "Guinevere," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "Getting to Know You," and more.

"Night Lights" Nat King Cole h
      ...available here.
"Night Lights" is the previously unreleased 1956 Nat "King" Cole album featuring arrangements by Nelson Riddle. Funny thing is, this album wasn't totally lost; we know many of these tunes as hit singles, including the title track, "Too Young to Go Steady," and "I Just Found Out About Love." With this release, Cole fans can hear the rest of these charming sessions in their complete glory. In all, you get a dozen previously unreleased tracks.

"Bells Are Ringing (2001 Revival Broadway Cast)" Faith Prince
      ...available here.
Though the show itself didn't receive the necessary life support a Tony win might have conferred, the revival of Comden and Green's classic bonbon "Bells Are Ringing" will soon be available in its 2001 cast recording incarnation, starring Faith Prince and directed by Tina Landau.

"Whiter Shade of Pale [CD-SINGLE]" Sarah Brightman
      ...available here.
Superstar crossover vocalist Sarah Brightman greets the new millennium with a bolder grasp of her musical niche on "La Luna," a concept album only in a free-associative sense. The concert version is now available on DVD, and a remix album of "Whiter Shade of Pale" has just been released.

      "Blast!" Blast
      ...available here.
Singled out as winner of the Special Theatrical Event award in this year's Tonys, "Blast!" is as much a visual as a musical parade--and you can now enjoy it on DVD.
